Our Future Breeding Program

About the Breed

At Coastal Cardigans, we are carefully building a breeding program centered on health, temperament, structure, and preserving the wonderful qualities of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Our dogs are still young and are growing into exceptional representatives of the breed. Before any breeding takes place, each dog will complete the recommended health testing and evaluations to help ensure we are producing healthy, well-adjusted puppies.

Did You Know?

That tail is 100% natural

Unlike the Pembroke — often born with, or historically given, a docked tail — Cardigans proudly sport a long, fox-like tail, one of the breed's defining features.

Dash, our black and white Cardigan Welsh Corgi male

Our Black & White Male

Our handsome black and white male has a wonderful temperament and classic Cardigan features. As he matures, we look forward to seeing him develop into a strong representative of the breed. Depending on the genetics of the female he is paired with in the future, he may contribute to a variety of beautiful coat colors while passing along his intelligence, loyalty, and confident personality.

Fun Fact

Those big ears are practical

Bred to herd livestock, Cardigans use their large, expressive ears to detect movement and sound across open fields.

Our Blue Merle Female

Our blue merle female, with her striking blue eyes, has already captured our hearts. As she continues to mature, we look forward to seeing her grow into a beautiful, well-rounded Cardigan. If she is ultimately included in our breeding program, future puppies could inherit the stunning merle pattern, though every puppy will have its own unique markings and personality.

Fun Fact

Born to herd cattle

Cardigans weren't just sheep dogs — they were bred to move cattle. Their low stature let them duck under a cow's kick while nipping at its heels.

Willow, our liver and white Cardigan Welsh Corgi female

Our Liver & White Female

Our liver and white female showcases one of the more uncommon Cardigan coat colors. As she matures, we're excited to watch her continue developing into an excellent example of the breed. If she becomes part of our future breeding program, she may contribute to producing liver puppies when paired with a male that also carries the liver gene.

Seriously smart

Cardigans consistently rank among the smartest herding breeds, and love learning new tricks, solving puzzles, and working right alongside their people.

Future Color Possibilities

While our breeding program is still in its early stages, we enjoy learning about Cardigan genetics and the exciting possibilities they can offer. The exact colors of future puppies will always depend on the genetics carried by both parents.

Potential Pairing: Black & White Male × Blue Merle Female

Possible puppy colors may include:

Some merle puppies may also have one or two blue eyes, though eye color can vary and is never guaranteed.

Responsible breeding note: We will never breed two merle dogs together. Ethical Cardigan breeders avoid merle-to-merle pairings because they significantly increase the risk of hearing and vision problems in puppies.

Fun Fact

Built for all seasons

A weather-resistant double coat keeps Cardigans cozy in winter and comfortable in cooler months. Regular brushing keeps them looking their best year-round.

Potential Pairing: Black & White Male × Liver & White Female

Possible puppy colors may include:

Because liver coloring is a recessive trait, both parents must carry the liver gene for liver puppies to be possible.

Fun Fact

A healthy, long-lived breed

With good care, nutrition, and routine vet visits, Cardigans commonly live 12–15 years — and many enjoy even longer.

At Coastal Cardigans, beautiful colors are exciting, but they will never be our primary focus. Our commitment is to raising healthy, well-socialized Cardigan Welsh Corgis with outstanding temperaments that will become cherished members of their forever families.
